The teaching materials (texts – activities – exercises) are basically supplementary, suitable for remedial or compensatory classes at public secondary schools with a certain percentage of Minority pupils. At Minority secondary schools and at secondary schools with a pupil body that consists only of Minority children, these materials could be used as an alternative to the already existing one.

The new materials are based on the (regular) textbooks for the Modern Greek language classes at secondary schools, they follow their structure, but are adapted to the needs of pupils for whom Greek is their second or a foreign language. They could, nevertheless, be used by Greek-speaking pupils (who are in mixed schools), because they are scaled based on several difficulty levels. In other words, they allow teachers to choose the texts and activities-exercises that they find most suitable for each pupil according to their Greek fluency level.

For each thematic unit of the (regular) textbooks, a “dossier” of materials has been prepared, which includes:

  • Texts that could be comprehended more easily by pupils whose mother tongue is not Greek.

  • Language activities, that are fun and friendly, that favor group-work and also enhance children’s motivation to enrich their vocabulary and use the new Greek words that they learn in various communication situations.

Each text and exercise/activity has one of three difficulty levels (A – easy, B-- moderately difficult, C – difficult), which is indicated at the top of each document.

The texts (which cover as wide a range as possible: Literature, essays, journalistic articles, advertisements, “how-to” texts, cartoons, etc.) are followed by exercises for comprehension and production of the spoken and written word.

With regard to grammar, what is included is the basic terminology, while emphasis is given on exercises that employ the texts from the thematic units.

(The materials for the teaching of the Greek language at secondary schools have been approved by the Pedagogical Institute.)
